G.Donizetti L`elisir d`amore
18th Nov 2025 19:30 - Beit Shmuel, Eliyahu Shama St.6, Jerusalem
A stunning romantic comedy about a beautiful, spoiled young woman, a simple country boy hopelessly in love with her, and a dubious love potion that just might bring them together.
Lightness, sparkle, and magic – all this is The Elixir of Love.
Synopsis
The opera takes place in 19th-century Italy, on one of the farms owned by the young, wealthy, and beautiful Adina. She entertains her guests by reading the tale of Tristan and Isolde, whose love is ignited by a magical drink.
Into the village square arrives a flamboyantly dressed traveling doctor and charlatan, Dulcamara, selling all kinds of potions. Naturally, the love potion attracts the most attention, and a line quickly forms. Nemorino asks for the very elixir that inflamed Isolde’s heart. Dulcamara obliges – for a hefty price – but the “potion” turns out to be nothing more than wine. Slightly drunk, Nemorino again declares his love to Adina, but she, out of spite, agrees to marry Sergeant Belcore.
The wedding is set, and Nemorino is in despair. He turns once more to Dulcamara for a faster-acting potion. After drinking it, Nemorino suddenly becomes the object of affection for all the village girls – including Adina. News also arrives that Nemorino has inherited a fortune from his uncle. Pretending indifference, he makes Adina realize her own feelings, and in the final duet, they confess their love. Meanwhile, Dulcamara proudly insists that his potion was the true cause of this happy ending.
A costumed stage version of the opera with artistic video projections, in Italian, accompanied by orchestra, featuring the international cast of soloists of the Jerusalem Lyric Opera.
